Europe Travel Guide Part 1: Sorrento, Capri & Positano

Europe Travel Guide: Sorrento, Capri and Positano

Things around here have finally settled down! We got back from Europe, unpacked and repacked to head back to Cleveland. We had our friends wedding and we had to pick Rambo up from my parents. So we are finally back in Vegas and things are slowly getting back to normal around here. I’m so excited to share our trip to Europe with you guys! Seeing Italy and Greece was always something that was on my bucket list. I feel so fortunate to have been able to experience such an amazing trip! These are the hotels, restaurants and things we did that we loved and would recommend to somebody planning a trip to Southern Italy.

Sorrento

We started our trip in Sorrento, which is in Southern Italy and looks over the bay of Naples. We flew into Rome and rented a car to drive down to Sorrento. There is a high speed train that will take you down, but because we were going to be doing a lot of jumping around we rented a car. The town of Sorrento was very beautiful and was right on the water, which I loved!

Where to Stay

While we were in Sorrento we stayed at the Hilton Sorrento Palace. I liked the location because it was in a quiet area, but was close enough to walk into the square where all of the restaurants and shops were. They had the most gorgeous views of the bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. We had complimentary breakfast in the mornings overlooking the water.

Where to Eat

  • Sorrento Restaurant– We were so tired from traveling all day that we decided to stay at our hotel and eat the first night and it definitely did not disappoint! We both got pasta, one of many dishes on our trip!

  • Terrazza Bosquet– This was definitely our favorite meal while in Sorrento! This restaurant was located in the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria, it overlooks the Gulf of Naples. We sat outside and overlooked the water during sunset, so stunning! This restaurant was on the pricier side, but was well worth it, the service was incredible and so was the food!

Things To Do

Our time in Sorrento was not very long, but we both agreed that we wanted to make the trip over to see Capri while we were there. There is a ferry that will take you from Sorrento to Capri in about 30 mins. We had scheduled a boat ride around the island of Capri, which we both thought was so much fun! We went with a company called Capri Relax Boats. It was just the two of us and our driver, and he took us around the whole island. We got to see all of the different grotto’s, yes there is more than just the blue grotto! The boat ride was about two hours and it was really cool to be able to see the whole island from the water.  Our time in Capri was super short, but I definitely hope to get back one day so we can spend more time there.

Positano

The rest of the time we spent in Southern Italy was in Positano. I had seen a ton of pictures and videos from other people who had been there, but I must say it was even better in person! It really is such a special town and is just beyond gorgeous! The town is built around a beach and is built up into the mountains, so the views are just incredible. Every street is so picturesque, just like something you would see in a movie.

Where to Stay

We stayed at Hotel Buca di Bacco while we were in Positano. I had heard stories about the hotels in Positano not being very “updated”, but I must say I was pleasantly surprised when we got there! Our hotel was literally right down by the beach and was so unique and charming. It was set up like a boutique hotel, 44 rooms and all of them look different. Our hotel room had the best views overlooking the beach (all of the orange umbrellas!) We were given complimentary breakfast in the morning, which two of them we ate on our gorgeous balcony, what a dream!

Where to Eat

  • Next2– We ate here our first night in Positano and the food was really good! It has a nice view that overlooks the water and the ambiance was really cool here. Of course the food was delicious too!

  • Buca di Bacco– Our hotel was also connected to it’s own restaurant and the food was really good. It’s located right near the beach, perfect if you’re not looking to climb a million sets of stairs! Some of the best Italian food we had.
  • Da Gabrisa– This restaurant had the most gorgeous views that looked over the cliff and onto the water. It was quite the hike to get there, but well worth it! It’s nestled up into the mountainside and the sunset views were amazing. The meatballs are a must at this place!

How about that for a dinner view!?

Things To Do

  • Cooking class at Buca di Bacco– We took a cooking class at the restaurant in our hotel and it was one of my favorite things we did on the whole trip! It was so cool to learn how to make gnocchi, eggplant, pizza and more from straight from an Italian chef. I can’t wait to test out my cooking skills that we learned while we were there!
  • Faro Bar– If you’re looking for a place to grab a cocktail and watch the sunset this is the place! The view was absolutely stunning and it is right next to Il Capitano; another restaurant that I heard is really good.
  • Head to the beach- Yes, the famous Marina Grande Beach that you see with all the orange umbrellas! It really was so cool to see in person. You can get your chair and buy a drink, the perfect way to chill out during the day!
  • Check out all of the boutiques- The streets of Positano were all so cute and are lined with hotels, boutiques restaurants and markets. Definitely something to check out when you’re wanting to explore.
  • Have dinner or a cocktail at Le Sirenuse– This hotel is definitely something to see! A lot of celebrities have been known to stay at this hotel while in Positano and I can definitely see why! If you can’t afford the high price tag, it’s still worth stopping for a drink or dinner, the views are beautiful from there.
  • Rent a boat- We didn’t rent a boat while we were in Positano because we had in Capri and kind of ran out of time. But from what I hear it’s another fun thing you can do while visiting the beautiful Positano!

I could honestly go on and on about Positano! It was so beautiful and everything I expected, maybe even more. The only thing that I would do differently is maybe pick a different time of year to go. I will say that it was EXTREMELY crowded. We knew this going in because it was high season, but we had to go at that time so we didn’t have much of a choice. Because of it being high season, the prices for hotels and flights were also higher. From what I hear September and October slow down, so if you’re not into huge crowds and looking to save some money maybe try that time of year.

That concludes the first leg of our trip. Next up is Santorini! Those of you who have been to Southern Italy, what were some of your favorites?

Xoxo,

Danielle
